What is Worker Down Detection?

This system uses AI and sensors to detect when a worker has fallen and cannot get up. Once activated, it will alert a designated individual or team for prompt assistance.

How Worker Down Detection Works

Traditionally, worker down detection is possible through a system that uses radio frequency (RF) to send and receive signals. 

The device worn by the worker emits a signal that is picked up by the receiver. If the signal is interrupted for more than a few seconds, the receiver will sound an alarm to trigger a response. 

The Two Types of RF-Based Systems

There are two main types of RF-based worker down detection systems: passive and active. 

  • Passive Systems - These systems rely on reflection to detect the signal from the tag. They function well in indoor environments without obstacles between the tag and the receiver.
  • Active Systems - Active systems use power-amplified tags that emit their own signals. This allows them to work effectively even in outdoor settings or large facilities where obstacles may disrupt passive systems.

The Odd One Out - Infrared (IR) Technology

Infrared (IR) technology can also be used for worker down detection, but it has some limitations. For example, IR signals can be disrupted by sun glare or reflective surfaces. 

Additionally, IR systems require line-of-sight between the tag and receiver, which can make them difficult to use in some industrial applications.
